Candle Waxes Compared. Which Wax is Right for Your Project?

Anyone who makes candles themselves quickly realizes that not all wax is created equal. The choice of the right type of wax influences not only the appearance, but also the scent intensity, burning behavior, and processing. At Hansawax, we place great importance on sustainable and high-quality raw materials that can be optimally combined.
Below, we introduce five popular container waxes and highlight their special features.
Coconut Wax – creamy and fragrant
Coconut wax is obtained from coconut oil and is one of the particularly soft waxes. Visually, it is usually lighter than many other types and is characterized by a very creamy consistency. With a melting point of approximately 52 °C, it is easy to work with. Particularly noteworthy is its high fragrance absorption of up to 12%, which allows for the creation of intensely scented candles. Coconut wax is therefore ideally suited for scented candles and delicate, creamy surfaces like candle frosting.

Rapeseed Wax – stable and versatile
Rapeseed wax is made from rapeseed oil and is one of the harder container waxes. Its melting point is around 58 to 62 °C, which ensures a stable candle structure. With a fragrance absorption of up to 10%, rapeseed wax is also well-suited for scented candles. Due to its firmness, it is a good choice when the candle needs to be dimensionally stable or withstand higher temperatures.
Olive Wax – sustainable and balanced
Olive wax is made from residues of olive oil production, making it a particularly sustainable option. Its hardness is in the medium range, being softer than rapeseed wax and firmer than coconut wax. Its slightly creamy color gives candles a natural, high-quality look. Olive wax is ideal for those who value sustainability while seeking a balanced combination of stability and workability. This wax has a melting point of 56 °C, with a maximum fragrance absorption of 12%.
Shea Wax – soft and pliable
Shea wax is a relatively new trend in candlemaking and is derived from shea nuts. It is particularly soft and has a melting point of approximately 49 °C. Its fragrance absorption is up to 12%, making it interesting for scented candles. A special feature is that the wax adheres very nicely to the edge of the glass. However, it requires a bit more time to cool, which should be considered when making things like candle frosting.
Soy Wax – the all-rounder for beginners
Soy wax is made from soybean oil and is one of the most popular waxes, especially for those new to the hobby. It is soft, creamy, and has a melting point of approximately 46 to 48 °C. With a fragrance absorption of up to 10%, it is well-suited for scented candles. Its creamy texture, perfect for candle frosting, is particularly appreciated. An important note: colors often appear more pastel in soy wax. For more vibrant color results, rapeseed or olive wax are more suitable.

Conclusion: The right choice depends on your goal
Each type of wax has its own advantages. While coconut and shea waxes impress with their creaminess and high fragrance absorption, rapeseed and olive waxes offer more stability. Soy wax remains the ideal entry point for anyone looking to undertake their first candle projects.
